Heard this in an old dcTalk song, which it turns out is a quote from Brennan Manning:
"The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door, and deny him with their life style. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."
There is a ton of back-and-forth about this out there on the internets. Most atheists say "no, no it is Reason/Logic/Thinking that causes athiesm". I pretty much disagree.
I think what he is saying goes pretty deep, but basically means this - we don't walk the talk. Most of us anyways. I can see why CVC is so focused on discipleship this year - we don't want to be a church full of people that deny Christ with our lifestyle. I've been thinking alot lately about what a shame it is to have wasted the life we are given to us by God... when we get to Heaven and we're like, "But Jesus, I took a lot of sweet vacations! Look at these TVs! My house was always clean! My kids wore the best clothes! We didn't do any of those bad things those bad people do! What? The BMW? Well, you know, I thought I deserved it...", how many of us will miss out on the "Well done, my good and faithful servant"?
Have you ever met one of those people that takes Jesus seriously? Man, you just know it when you meet them. There is something about what they do that is inspiring, that is undeniable... that is what I think Manning means...
